Well it is best to bring the car to the Service department, what if you thought you did it right and it was wrong. Why would the drivers seat belt need replacing due to the airbag, enlighten the crvoc forim members, Reactions 1 It would be best to have a collision center make the repairs to this gen 1 crv but due to its age and the fact that new airbags are unavailable or at least the four shops I inquired with couldn’t source them and the fact that Honda no longer makes this airbag available through the service department. The car is in great condition and in my opinion not a total loss. Once I found airbags and made sure that they were not part of the current recall I thought a shop would install them for me but no. In regards to the drivers seatbelt it locked in the out position it was in when the accident happened. So now I’m trying to find in the FSM what the voltage should be on the airbag circuit and if I need to replace the shock sensor in the bumper? See less See more Reactions 1 I know nothing about the air bags safety restraint systems. But, it would seem prudent to check on the shock sensors in the bumpers to make sure they are not continuing to present a signal to blow the air bags?? The other thing is to disconnect the battery before trying to install these air bags. Makes sure there is no residual power left so as to not excite the air bags to explode. Even if no one is willing to install the air bags, you can still ask questions on how to do such a thing. Preferably asking a Honda tech. Good luck to you Reactions 1 First, do not probe an airbag connector with a volt/ohm meter, it might set the air bag off. Next you really need to obtain a Honda service manual. You can download Honda Service manuals for older models for free or at little cost, just google honda service manuals for your model. The manual will take you step by step testing and replacing an air bag. It's helpful to have a scanner capable of reading SRS code. Manufacturers typically recommend replacing the impact sensors if they were in an accident even if they reset and checked ok. So now I’m trying to find in the FSM what the voltage should be on the airbag circuit and if I need to replace the shock sensor in the bumper? You didn't say what model you have but in the 2000 CRV service manual the SRS section begins around pdf page 1310. you might also search "24-15" which is the section and page for the SRS. An awful lot of variables here, and safety related. In the absence of service parts and professional installation, I'd consider hanging it up and shop for a replacement vehicle. The airbag control module will need to be replaced after any deployment. Impact and system data from the collision is permanently stored, so you need a new module. You'll also need to check the passenger seat belt to make sure it is still fully functional because airbag deployment triggers automatic retraction of both front seat belts. The main impact sensor is in the srs control module. Be sure to check the other sensors as well. Check over the wiring to make sure no wires got burned. The service manual may be found in a sticky thread at the top of the first generation section of this forum. The app version is easier to navigate. OP also said his collision center couldn't work on the car because of new airbags being unavailable. They were asking what the other repairs needed are. Reactions 1 A lot of people are saying for you to take the car to a shop, but I'm just going to throw these things out here for a bit of perspective. The supplemental restraint system airbags is not the most complicated system in the car, and is not more complicated than other systems in the car that people in this forum regularly do work on. It is not the most difficult part of the car to work on, nor is it's more difficult to fix than other things described in this forum. It is not the most important safety system in the car. It is not the most dangerous part of the car to mess up. The service manual in this forum will tell you everything you need to know to fix the airbag system. Cars were made for many decades without having airbags at all. If you don't feel confident you can make the repairs yourself, you can just leave your airbags disconnected and the car will still be safer to drive than a car from the 80s in mint condition. Thanks in advance for the help and humor! - You DO NOT want to inadvertently ignite the airbags while installing it them. So I don’t know EXACTLY what year you are fixing, but I have a service manual as well as the troubleshooting book with electric schematics in it. I don’t need it any more and should put it up for sale, but if you find you want to have a physical copy, then I’ll sell it to you, yes I said sell, it’s pretty heavy so shipping is best if it fits in a flat rate box and it kinda looks like you are also in the USA, so there, USPS large flate rate would be worst case cost. Now onto the issues, this troubleshooting book is for 97-98 year models and has quite a bit of information for the SRS system in fuse panel etc. it states to unplug airbag and seatbelt tensioner connectors before working on the system, it ALSO states if the car has been turned off less than 3 minutes, do not bump the srs unit or accidental deployment could occur, so I would use that as a rule of thumb when disconnecting the battery ground, wait at least 3 minutes before working on things in the car. my main service manual handles CR-Vs from 1997-1999, bear that in mind on your application. Looks like the srs main unit is in the center console onto the driver’s footwell, so it could be a salvaged part as long as it looks untouched and the manual states don’t get one that “looks like it has been subjected to water damage or shows signs of being dropped or improperly handled, such as dents, cracks, or deformation”. So I would take that to be okay to reuse yours since the tap was at the bumper and not a big crash, but that’s my interpretation of the SRS replacement requirements. I’m reading all this stuff outta the manual, section 24. you haven’t mentioned if you have a glowing SRS light or not or what have you. You also haven’t said if you have an OBD scan tool. Of course for answers and actions to those two answers, you’d have to turn the key in the ignition and if you are not fully ready to do that because you think the replaced bags might blow, well the. I still guess it’s good to know if you have a reader. ok here’s a note that WHENEVER the airbag has been activated, replace he SRS unit, of course that note is after mentioning to do not install used SRS parts from another vehicle!!? i shot a photo from the manual for what to do after deployment, hope it helps 2 MB Views 150 See less See more So I don’t know EXACTLY what year you are fixing, but I have a service manual as well as the troubleshooting book with electric schematics in it. Unfortunately some automotive shops see $$$ signs before customer satisfaction, and if you don't know anything about cars/trucks they can easily rip you off. That is why a lot of people like yourself tend to get rid of cars that have huge repair bills. Sometimes it is legit, and sometimes it is just padding the bill. Even if you don't know a lot about cars you should always ask the shop to show you exactly what has to be replaced & why. You can also take pictures & ask to have the old parts returned to you. Find a shop you trust & if their prices are reasonable you can always leave them a tip. It's what I do when having my car inspected. They don't make money on the inspection, but on the repairs that they may find. I will at least double the charge as a tip so that the next time I come for an inspection they are more inclined not to "find" something wrong. That is advice for a private shop that is concerned about customer service. They realize that they need repeat customers & word of mouth to have a thriving business. There will be somebody who is comfortable without airbags. Since we are on the topic of airbags - does anyone know if airbags in older cars are actually still dependable? For instance, I recently noticed that the airbags in my 2004 Volvo S60 actually had an expiration date printed on a doorframe sticker I know this is a Honda forum - I own 2 - but figure this question could still be applicable to Hondas.
